Health Care
Health Care Policy Paper
Texas is one of the fastest growing states in the country, but it is the undisputed leader in one shameful category – the rate of children and adults living without health insurance who are one bad break away from financial ruin.
The Legislature reversed cuts made in 2003 to the state’s Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), with an estimated 147,000 children added to the enrollment rolls since the change went into effect in September 2007, according to the Houston Chronicle.
Devasting UTMB job cuts
A statement from Chris Bell, candidate for Texas Senate District 17, on the announcement that 3,800 employees at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston (UTMB) will lose their jobs:
"The loss of 3,800 jobs at UTMB - nearly one third of the institution's workforce - is a devastating blow to the Galveston economy, which is already suffering from the crippling effects of Hurricane Ike. Far too many Texas families are still trying to piece their lives and their homes back together, and these job losses place are a huge roadblock to recovery.

Our unseen army
A speech given by Alison Bell at a Hadassah luncheon in Houston on Oct. 16, 2005.
Thank you for the introduction. It’s so nice to hear someone’s bio other than my husband’s. And thank you to this great group of women who do so much for our community. It’s an honor to be with you today.
When I sat down to plan out what I wanted to say today, I was a little nervous. As most of you know, I am not the public speaker in the family. And, as you can tell, I am a fairly new survivor having just finished chemo in June.
WWJD about stem cell research?
This op-ed article was written by Chris Bell and originally published in the Wise County Messenger on April 28, 2005.
Last October, back when I was a congressman, a church in Houston was having a Sunday school series on politics and faith, and they asked me to speak during one of the sessions. I'm a Democrat, but one of the best questions came from a Republican friend. It stumped me.
